US Topo Layer

Added US Topo layer to gpsfly. To use select "US Topo" from the map type drop down menu as usual. We use free imagery from MSRMaps.com, sometimes it's a little bit slow. Also wanted to add MyTopo layer, but looks like they don't give it anymore. Enjoy!

Assign location to photos

Useful new feature: add locations to photos based of the time of shot.

Suppose your photos don't have geolocation info, only time, and your track have time too. In this case you can automatically place your photos on the map in just a couple of clicks.

First, place one reference photo manually. This is needed to synchronize clocks between the track and the camera. After that, click "Assign Locations" button on top - all photos are now on the map.

If something goes wrong you can use the "Undo" button.

In other news, we fixed an important bug that prevented some tracks to display.

NEW: Upload Photos

We added photo upload!

Just use the button "Upload Photos" on the big track view. Many photos can be uploaded at once. Photos will appear under the track.
Geo-tagged photos will automatically appear on the map, others can be placed/moved using drag and drop (even in Earth view).

Click on the thumb to see big photo, then use "Map", "Next", "Prev" buttons to navigate the gallery. You can also use arrows or "A","S","D" buttons to navigate. Click on the caption below to edit it.

That's all at this moment, but we're working on it.

You can see an example here.

PS: You can now place photos automatically

Synchronized Zoom, SAT, DOP and New Graph

  • New Graph button on the top of the analyze window can be used to quickly add new graphs
  • Sat (number of satellites), VDOP, PDOP and HDOP was added to the list of imported fields for GPX format

Vertical Speed & User Homepage

Few improvements:
  • On the user homepage the date of the track is shown instead of the upload date;
  • It's possible to change or set the track date in the info panel on the right;
  • In flying mode the controls disappears;
  • On the analyze page there is a new graph, called "Vertical Speed" (height gain per hour); this graph is avalaible for tracks that have both time and elevation;
  • We removed the timeout that was preventing slow uploads to finish correctly;
  • We did various style improvements;

Here an example of the vertical speed graph

Smoother Flight + ATV

We improved the flight algo, now it's less "bumpy".
Our approach in case of obstacles between the cameraman and the little yellow guy was too aggressive. Now, the cameraman takes it easy and moves quickly only when the yellow guy is completely lost, otherwise he moves slowly.

Added the ATV aka All Terrains Vehicle to the activities. If you need other activities, just ask.

IMPORTANT BUG FIXED: In the last days it was impossible to sign up because of a bug, now it works again. Sorry for the inconvenience and thanks to pierrega who reported it.

SRTM Data

We improved the SRTM data feature for tracks without elevation data or elevation set to zero. In such cases gpsfly will attempt to fill the elevation using publicly available SRTM data. There is an example: http://gpsfly.org/a/343. We fetch the data as needed, so for tracks in regions where there is no data yet, the upload may be a little bit slower.

Activities

It's now possible to specify the activity of the track when you upload it.
Registered users can also specify/modify the type of the track on their homepage.
Icons are heavily inspired by Google Maps Icons.

When & Where

Added "when" and "where" to the track description:
  • When indicates the date the track was recorded (only for tracks with time information, we use first found time)
  • Where indicates the country and - if possible - the state/region of the starting point (we use Google Geo Location API and try to extract something meaningful from the results it returns)

Garmin TrackPointExtension

Fixed the bug with Garmin TrackPointExtension handling, now data is imported properly.

Those data usually consist of things like hearth rate, cadence, temperature. Examples of tracks with such data:

New version is online

We have decided to put online the new version of gpsfly, despite its incompleteness, because we were a little lost in the development. Feedback is appreciated.

So, now what's new?
  • You can analyze your track on a special page, where different graphs like speed and elevation are shown. Here you find an example: http://gpsfly.org/a/283
  • Track summary: average speed, time, moving time, pace, hearth-rate, temperature, etc
  • User personal homepage
  • Drag and drop upload on the personal page (except IE)
  • Edit track title and description on the personal homepage
  • Improved track player: play backward, proportional speed, track position control slider
  • Support for tracks in the sky (paragliding, airplane, etc). Example: http://gpsfly.org/g/17
  • Help tooltips (that you can disable)
  • For more interactivity there is a discussion group, where you can report bugs and suggest features.
